The history of Polfa Grodzisk

Polfa Grodzisk commenced its activity as early as 1885 under the name “Chemical Factory Georg Krell and S-ka (&Co.)”. One of the first manufactured product was the acetic acid and acetic essence form which “acetic plant”, the popular nickname of the Company, was taken on. The production of purely pharmaceutical semi-products began in 1906.

After the WWI, the Company was taken over by the National Economy Bank (BGK) and transformed  into Chemical Plants “Grodzisk Joint Stock Company”, specializing in production for military. Within few years, the Company became one of the strategic plant in national defence.

After the WWII, the Plant was modernized. It also shifted manufacture of half-finished food and chemical products to pharmaceutical synthesis. In 50s the Company became the part of United Pharmaceutical Plants “Polfa”.

In 1971, the first anti-infarction product was created by specialists from Grodzisk. From that time on the product offer has been  developing systematically and rapidly. In 1974 veterinary drugs were implemented to the product range. In the second half of 70s the drugs of Polfa were well-known not only in Poland but mainly on all Eastern markets. Due to huge export revenue Polfa became one of the most profitable Polish enterprises.

The Company experienced many name and owner changes during its long history. At the same time, however, it was systematically growing, introducing new products and modernizing manufacture technologies. The transformations that Polfa had been subject to in the last decades changed its main production profile in such manner that it was mainly engaged in the manufacture of ready-made human medicines.

The privatization process of Polfa Grodzisk was completed in 2002. Hungarian pharmaceutical concern Gedeon Richter became the Company’s strategic partner. Joint activities in the area of research, development of new products and marketing activity strengthen the standing of Polfa Grodzisk on the Polish market.
